In modern day the tribe called Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and other several small tribes were live in this Palm Springs region. Then at the year of 1896 United States Government established a reservation for the Agua Caliente. The Archaeological department research shows that this Cahuilla tribe was lived here for more than three hundred to five hundred years.The reservation for this tribe occupies the area of 13000 hectors, in which 2700 hectors of area lies under city limits which makes the Agua Caliente Band the largest land owner of the city. The reservation of the land was done actually around the desert which is in pattern of check board with the alternating square lands. The alternating non- reserved land were provided to the Sothern Pacific Railroads by the United States Government. The current estimation of the tribal enrolment is between two hundred and ninety six and three hundred sixty five peoples. The Cahuilla tribe named this area as “SE-KHI” which means boiling water. Later this area was named as “Agua Caliente” by the Spanish explorer which means the hot water. Then in the further days it was called as the “La Palma de La Mano de Dios” by Spanish explorer. Later name which came into common usage was “Palm Springs”.
